Show One Entertainment Inc. Presents
Baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky
Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Place des Arts
in concert with the Academy of Choral Art and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra
Constantine Orbelian, Conductor

It will be a concert of magnificent proportions! More than 90 performers will gather at Roy Thomson Hall on Thursday, November 29, 2007 for a concert with international vocal superstar Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Accompanied by Moscow’s Academy of Vocal Art and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra conducted by long-time collaborator Constantine Orbelian, the famed baritone will step away from his usual repertoire in celebration of Mother Russia with a concert of Russian arias and 19th and 20th century sacred and popular songs from his homeland.

Hvorostovsky has always retained strong musical ties with the music of his homeland and is revered for his interpretations of Russian war songs which he recorded with Maestro Orbelian and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra on the CD Where Are You My Brothers? These songs of courage are close to the hearts of both Hvorostovsky and Orbelian who pay homage to the soldiers of WWII and the lives lost, including their family members, under Stalin’s regime. In 2004, with President Putin in attendance, Hvorostovsky became the first opera singer to perform these songs in Moscow’s Red Square. The concert was broadcast to 138 million people in 25 countries.

Another highlight for vocal music fans will be the opportunity to discover the hauntingly beautiful liturgical works by Tchaikovsky’s contemporaries Tolstyakov, Chesnokov and Arhkangel’sky. Performed acapella, the songs can be heard on Hvorostovsky’s CD Credo.

The charismatic Hvorostovsky has sung at all of the world’s major opera houses. He is especially acclaimed for his portrayal of the title character in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin which The New York Times described him as "born to play the role." Upcoming in 2007/08, he will be performing in La Traviata, Ballo in Maschera, and Rigoletto, as well as in recitals from Iceland to Italy. “Gripping and virtuosic!” raved The Globe and Mail about his last Toronto appearance!
